1. What is an EIN?

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a federal tax ID issued by the IRS for businesses, nonprofits, trusts/estates, and other entities. It’s used to open bank accounts, file taxes, hire employees, and more.

2. Who needs an EIN?

You likely need an EIN if you:

  • Have employees
  • Will pay employment, excise, or alcohol/tobacco/firearms taxes
  • Withhold taxes on income paid to a non-resident alien
  • Operate as a partnership, LLC, corporation, tax-exempt organization, estate, or trust (most trusts)
  • Run a retirement plan/IRA trust, REMIC, or farmers’ cooperative

Even if you don’t need one for federal taxes, banks, or your state may still require an EIN.

3. What should I do before I apply?

  • Form your entity first. Register your LLC/corporation/partnership (or organize your charity) with your state before applying.
  • Tax-exempt orgs: Don’t apply until the organization is legally formed.
  • Political organizations: You must have an EIN to file Form 8871 within 24 hours of forming.

4. How can I use EINtact to apply for an EIN?

EINtact simplifies, guides, and streamlines the EIN application process. Instead of manually completing the IRS Form SS-4, EINtact walks you through a smart online questionnaire that automatically fills out the form for you—no guesswork required.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Answer a few questions about your business, organization, or trust.
  2. EINtact validates your entries (like entity type, name format, and responsible party info).
  3. We generate and submit your SS-4/EIN application directly to the IRS.
  4. You receive your EIN confirmation directly in your dashboard, usually within minutes for most U.S. applicants.

6. Who is the “responsible party”?

The responsible party is the individual who ultimately owns or controls the entity and its assets. You’ll need their name and SSN/ITIN/EIN (for entities).

7. When can I use my new EIN?

Right away for most needs:

  • Open a bank account
  • Apply for licenses
  • File paper tax returns

Allow up to 2 weeks before you can:

  • E-file certain returns
  • Use IRS TIN Matching
  • Make electronic tax payments (EFTPS enrollment)

8. Do I ever need a new EIN?

Yes, when your ownership or entity type changes (e.g., sole prop incorporates, partnership becomes a corporation). You don’t need a new EIN for a name, address, or responsible-party change.

9. I no longer need my EIN—can it be canceled?

EINs aren’t “canceled,” but they can be deactivated with the IRS. Visit HERE for more information on deactivating your EIN.

10. I lost or forgot my EIN—what now?

Try this first:

  • Check the original IRS EIN notice
  • Look at prior tax returns
  • Ask your bank or licensing agency

11. I have multiple EINs—Which one should I use?
